New Skin Project

Postby Ian Foletto » 11/08/2015, 13:34

New skin project is progressing as we aim to give ITN a better and newer look, more in line with 2015 users of the web.
There have been lots of talks about the new skin lately, so we thought to give a little preview, so that users start to see what's happening behind the scenes.
A usual question we receive is, why it is taking so long?
The reason is that we're not just changing the color scheme of the site, that would have been easy and fast. The actual site uses a "language" which is now obsolete, with a layout (frames) even more obsolete.
We initially worked on just a new skin but then decided it would be best to re-writing the whole site at the same time - so we only started the 'full' project 9 months (ish) ago, which means we lost a bit of time, but for good!
Rewriting the site to a newer language (like PHP which is a powerful open source "new" language) means that we're basically doing it from scratch. It Means creating a new website. And it's not all, once we're working on it, we thought the best thing would be adding new things and removing others not needed, so this means that we are not only doing a new website using the old scheme, but we're already adding new features, pages, functions and so on.
It really is a big task. Which I'm not doing alone, we have a team of people helping out in their spare time, which means that I surely won't ask for quick jobs done, I can only thank them for their free help for the good of the game.
At the moment the various pages of the game are being created, the task, once they're up and ready is checking how they respond, see if there are things we can get rid of, improve views, add new features.
Also, the site you see if only half the story. The back end means pages to be created for admins, or gamemasters to run the game, which needs to be done, tested and so on...

We decided to give you a few pages, so that you can see how things are progressing.
The link you see below is only a test page, it is not linked to the database, so it won't work if you login. But you can see how the home page is at the moment. If you try to resize the page you will see that it adapts perfectly. It is now responsive, and it fits the device you're using, without needing to move the page in all directions, on a tablet, on a smartphone. This is a thing we really needed!

We're also getting ready with a couple of internal pages to show you, we're trying to having them ready before the end of the week (many pages are ready in the test site, but we have to extract them for showing you).
I'll get back with more soon!

As promised, another little insight of the new skin project.
This time we're showing you a page inside the site (last time it was just the general home page).
This is a player page, with a whole new layout and way to display the various things.
Of course, please remember this is just a test page, most of the links don't work and not all things are already perfect. It's still a work in progress, take it as a way to show you where we're going and what we are doing.
Feel free to try resize the screen if you're on a computer, you will see the boxes adapt to the screen size, and it should fit fine on handheld devices.
In order to give you a better experience, in particular with tables and big data pages, please have a look at the 3 dots button you see next the logo. It's a toggle button, and if you click it you will see the bar collapsing and your work area getting bigger!
Also, all your things to do with your players now are in your players page (like moving to reserves, contract, transfer, training and so on...) no need to go to drop down menus like on the actual site.
